Honoka LV. Up
A series about a girl who starts working in VN company because of her uncle drawn by MATSUDA98. The author also did a oneshot called momoiro toiki, a 9 page yuri story. There's a little bit of that element in here. Very cute artwork and the concept, characters and story are interesting. Baito should like this one since the artwork is good. Seems to be a weekly series judging by no. of pages per chapter. Complete series with four volumes and 9 chapters per volume. Relatively easy to translate too.

Lucky Star
Does this series really need to be explained? Galooza and I have talked about doing this series before but my main problem with doing it is that the first two volumes lack furigana and hence are much more difficult to translate than Airantou even though it's a 4koma. The extra stuff like data sheets in the volumes are also handwritten so that's a bit of problem. Upside is it's huge fanbase so that could attract more people. This was the series I wanted to try on my own back before I joined this group but never got around to it. 6 volumes out so far and I had to hunt around to look for them but most of them are on megaupload. For some reason, previous groups have dropped it. A curse maybe?

Fate/ Kaleid Liner Prisma Ilya
A spin off from fate/stay night starring Ilya. Very well drawn and surprisingly high quality action scenes that I can only describe my reaction which was the same with seeing Nanoha's action scenes; O_O "Since when did Mahou Shojos kick so much ass?!". Seriously, when did that start? Interesting characters and humor, story's a little generic but good for fanservice to both lolicons and fans of the main series. And also people with maid fetishes. Group that did the first two chaps seem to be inactive. Should also gain a lot of attention.

I like all of them. Dunno how fast you translators can translate but ill guess moderately fast. I agree with not working with liscenced manga as because of the following....

Lets say your scanlating for 2k people (2000) and the series is liscenced.
Lets say you scanlate an entire series (some 8 volumes).
In dollars, 8 times 8 times 2000= 128,000 USD lost of revenue. The liscencing fee is some where around that im guessing

And the company crashes and a bunch of people lose their jobs and you just killed the next 5k people who were gonna buy it. If not a crash, you slow it down, and the bringing of japanese culture to the US slows down.

I don't know about lucky star but honoka could be safe. If i remember right, brocolli has the license but their US division shut down last month. I don't remember seeing this series on the list of titles being rescued by geneon either. I also remember reading that the IRA of your area giving up on handling illegal uploads on the internet due to lack of resources. The economic crisis certainly has impacted the license issue quite a bit.

Also, keep in mind that we happen to be rereleasing hq chapters of negima which is also licensed. And while scanlating this manga may affect sales, it could also raise interest around it. Naruto didn't get such high sales in the US just because of the publishing company's ads but mostly due to the fact that there was a source online and people enjoying it enough to buy it.

My view on doing licensed manga is: Only if it is on an online viewer and it still allowed to be shown. That says that the company doesn't mind it being shown as it will get more people attracted to it. As Transfade said, MSN is a prime example.

I like the look of Honoka and from what you said about their division being shut down, I would give it an ok. But that's me. If they send a cease and desist letter to TM then we can always stop. Either that or Kurogane no Linebarrels is open for the taking.

o.o. Funny thing, im a prime counterexample. =) I read it but i never buy it =). Only with series i truly like do i buy it. For me, it would be Rurouni Kenshin and Chobits. Whatever, but that does not apply with anime as i rarely buy it unless it is extremely rare on the internet.

Well...the best reason people avoid licensed series is because it puts them in harm with the companies and publishers (Just look at Meep, they got shut down with a C&D notice). If they find out, they have the rights to sue you, since scanlating IS illegal even if it isn't licensed in your country.

I think Meep got it because they were really testing the boundary. Practically all of their series were Korean Manwhas and published by the same company I think. That's a one-hit kill as far as the publishers stopping scanlators goes.

i always buy the english versions of series i really like (i just read them in the bookstore/ online if it isnt the kind of series that i would read again and again) or if i cant find the scanlations. so far i have all english naruto, Rosario + Vampire (My fav series of all time), and battle club (unscanlated) and some ranma 1/2.

In any case, honoka will most likely not be a problem cocerning licenses. In my case though, i plan on buying the original dvds should i strike it rich though for now it's just the merchandising and chuang-yi books for me. Anyone else awaiting their kagamiku figma for april?

Sorry for the double post but I wanted to bump this to make things clear since Baito said I should explain things clearly.

1) I do want to drop Negima Neo
2) If we have enough people for both Honoka and Ilya, I'm willing to do both.
3) If I am going to do both of them then I'll be leaving Airantou to Baito, Treece and Chisanahikari since we now have more than enough translators do more multiple projects consistently.
4) I've already started doing Ilya chapter 3 since things are leaning that way.
5) I'd like to have Brazen proofread the Ilya chapters so the translation is consistent with Fate/ Stay Night Terminology.

Btw, since Honoka was so cute I couldn't resist using her as my new sig.

well i guess were dropping neo and get a new series.iam free right now but i dont know when i get busy so, i will join the team if there is no competition for release.

Hmmmm, I partially agree with the dropping of Nengima !? neo. Reason: if the anime is no longer subtitled (ep26 is not subbed yet even though it has been out to sub for 2 yrs, but it has been liscenced but people still do it anyways) and somehow guessing it follows the plot the anime, (partially doubt it though), I'll say it will suck. Only was in it for the action. So, another series, as long you guys keep omamori hiwari and NA, im fine =).
