PostSubject: typesetter application   Thu Jan 08, 2009 11:18 am

hello, i would like to apply for the position of typesetter. this is my first try, so any advice would be greatly appreciated

Spoiler:

i know its probably just mediocre, so anything you can teach me would be appreciated. is i could become a member of the scanlation team that would be good too though.

EDIT:
i forgot to mention that i am also interested in learning how to do other positions, but i am still learning them, so i wont be able to help for a while.

Not bad by any means for your first go at it, you even got the handle of how to tilt. I like your font usage, but you'll have to learn where to place them. Punctuation is definitely needed and shaping needs work, but those come with practice. I'd wanna see more practice before I say yes. Here's a pretty basic bubble type of how I typeset:

Regular Bubble: Wild Words
Excited Bubble: (top-left panel) Yikes!
Exclamatory Bubble (Spiky Bubble) - D*** Noisy Kids
Scared Bubble (curvy) - Mouth Breather

Btw, that's Tonkatsu you put some text into. He's not a bubble Try out the page I just posted on the test thread. It has all four types of the above mentioned bubbles. You also need to learn cloning and redrawing though.

yeah, sorry about that tonkatsu thing, don't read that manga. i just saved the page you mentioned but im wondering whether i need to put new SFX in place of the old ones, or can i just clone then out. thanks for the advice and i will definitely practice more from now on.

Naw, we don't bother with SFX, just leave the sfx. The title to that chapter is Chapter 47: Youkai/Demon

Ras is outty. so I'll act in his place because Mongo-sama is Ras' homie. We're so close, we're even on the same cycle ( *snicker* ) I approve. Be wary of confusing pigs with text bubbles in the future, though. Welcome!

We train people who need or want training, but that's different than pulling straight onto the team. A trainee team could be good for those who are actively trying to improve. Yes, heed TM's words. After you put all the text in, move your cursor outside the box and you can move it around to center it. Or when you're typesetting, try spacing the text yourself after you put it in or during. You don't wanna run into the edge of the bubble, more specifically if you can make a diamond or rectangular shape then that is preferred.

Typesetting does take practice. Some people say it's so easy anyone can do it. Anyone can do it, but there's no guarantee that they can do it well. It's harder than it's made out to be.The main points to improving yourself are:

Centering
Redrawing
Shaping
Fonts (learn the fonts)

Nobody questions Mongo-sama!!!!!!

lol. Glooze/Meow-kun, Where do I have the authority for Typesetters?

Answer: I don't. It was a joke, but just you watch, this kid will be a part of the team. The only person who would have authority doesn't have the stones to pull the trigger, so we'll wait it out for Ras to get back.

And actually, it's pretty good stuff, the things you seem to have a problem with are small and easily fixable mistakes. I like how he's rotated the text to add a little spice to his entry. This kid has potential. Not to mention Ras is low on Typesetters. I wouldn't expect you guys to be so hesitant to accept a decent entry like this one.

it seems kinda importatnt, so i thought i'd ask. what is redrawing. at first i thought it was removing the SFX using the clone tool but its obviously not that, so im left a little confused.

It's removing Japanese text outside the bubble and redrawing the image instead of leaving it blank. Usually involves the clone stamp tool, the line tool, and the paint brush with a 2 pt pixel. It's easier than it sounds. Just takes practice and experience. Whenever I have the rare opportunity to clean, I do the redrawing myself, but sometimes a typesetter has to do this themselves.

i am sorry if it appeared that i was trying to get training off the team, i was not. before i asked what redrawing was i tried to look it up on google, but found nothing, neither was it mentioned in the guides i read just before i did the first page. i am trying to learn what it is by myself.

Anyways, here is the next page with the redraws done. i tried my best, partly why it took so long, the other part is me getting distracted by manga and WoW.

Definitely a lot better. Still some work that needs to be done, but you'll improve better if you do chapters. I'd say yes (not that I hold the final word). Things that need work on this page:

1) Only two fonts used. I would've liked to see what different fonts you have and can utilize. There's a font pack DL in the test thread if you need.

2) The size of the typesetting in the 1st bubble of the 1st panel and the bubble in the 3rd panel should be lowered about 2-3 pts to fit the bubble better.

3) Redraws need work, but that's not too bad seeing as you just learned. Learn to use the pen tool and keep practicing. I'm not sure if you saw what I said the title of the chapter is. What you would do is write the title of the chapter over the Japanese text then redraw what should be seen through the English.
